Musk co-founded OpenAI alongside Sam Altman, the company’s CEO, and other researchers in 2015. The pair were close collaborators in the company’s early days, but their relationship deteriorated dramatically over the next decade.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Musk left OpenAI’s board in 2018 after months of tense negotiations about the company’s structure and path forward, including a failed bid to combine it with his automaker Tesla. He went on to start a competing AI company, xAI, in 2023, which merged with SpaceX earlier this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2024, Musk sued OpenAI, Altman, and Greg Brockman, the company’s president, alleging that they went back on their vow to keep the startup a nonprofit. After three weeks of testimony in federal court in Oakland, California, this year, Musk lost that case.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Musk praised Anthropic as “obviously currently the leader in AI,” in a post on X on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In May, Anthropic forged a deal with SpaceX to use all of the compute capacity at the company’s Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee. As part of the deal, Anthropic will pay SpaceX $1.25 billion per month through May 2029, according to a regulatory filing.<\/p>\n

The deal marked a notable change in tone from Musk, who had openly criticized Anthropic because of its clash with the U.S. Department of Defense.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I was clearly wrong about Anthropic,” Musk wrote Thursday.<\/p>\n
