worth of South Korean stocks this year, even as the Kospi has emerged as one of the world&#8217;s standout performers thus far, with record year-to-date gains.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, overseas investors had unloaded a net 1.24 trillion won (about $801 million) worth of Kospi-listed shares as of 11am Singapore time (11p.m. ET Sunday), according to Korea Exchange data. <\/p>\n<div style=\"height:100%\" class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Foreign investors continued to sell the Kospi market, driven by outflows for Kospi Tech and Auto,&#8221; <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-2\">Goldman Sachs<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> analysts wrote in a June 5 note.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3\">Kospi<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> was down more than 8% at the open.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108317903\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Yet many investors and strategists say foreign selling has less to do with deteriorating fundamentals and more to do with the market&#8217;s own success.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is essentially forced selling that we are seeing from our investors and clients,&#8221; said Chetan Seth, <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-4\">Nomura<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>&#8216;s Asia-Pacific equity strategist.<\/p>\n<p>As Korean stocks have surged, their weightings in global and emerging-market benchmarks have increased sharply, forcing many active fund managers to trim positions to stay within portfolio and risk limits, investors told CNBC.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:100%\" class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<p>The selling pressure has been evident for months. Goldman estimated net foreign outflows from the Kospi had reached roughly $62 billion as of late May.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">&#8216;Structural pressures&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The phenomenon mirrors what happened in India in recent years, according to Nomura, where surging domestic retail participation increasingly crowded out foreign investors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think the same dynamic might play out in Korea as well,&#8221; Seth added, noting that foreign investors may wait for better entry points after a pullback.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nick Wilcox, managing director for discretionary equities at Man Group, echoed that view, noting that Korea&#8217;s rapid ascent in emerging-market indices has created structural pressures for international investors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Collapsible-proliveCollapsableContainer\" role=\"button\">\n<div class=\"Collapsible-proLivePlayerCloseOrExpand\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/ywAAAAAAQABAAACAUwAOw==\" fifu-lazy=\"1\" fifu-data-sizes=\"auto\" fifu-data-srcset=\"https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg?w=75&resize=75&ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg?w=100&resize=100&ssl=1 100w, https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg?w=150&resize=150&ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg?w=240&resize=240&ssl=1 240w, https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg?w=320&resize=320&ssl=1 320w, https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg?w=500&resize=500&ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg?w=640&resize=640&ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg?w=800&resize=800&ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg?w=1024&resize=1024&ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg?w=1280&resize=1280&ssl=1 1280w, https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg?w=1600&resize=1600&ssl=1 1600w\" fifu-data-src=\"https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg\" class=\"Collapsible-dismissButton\" alt=\"hide content\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"border:1px solid #d9d9d9;width:100%\" class=\"InteractiveChart-container\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"InteractiveChart-caption\">The Kospi index<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>He added that some investors are also bumping up against regulatory restrictions on how much they can own of individual companies after Korea&#8217;s largest stocks surged.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of the selling is forced selling because investors are coming up against active limits.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet foreign selling has been more than offset by a wave of domestic buying.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The outflow from foreigners has been more than made up for by domestic investors,&#8221; Wilcox said, pointing to an estimated $70 billion of retail inflows this year and a sharp increase in brokerage account openings.<\/p>\n<p>The selling also reflects growing concerns over risk concentration, as Korea&#8217;s rally has become increasingly dependent on Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, in spite of the offloading, market veterans maintained that the fundamentals of Korean equities remained robust.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t get a sense that investors are taking foreign investors are taking a negative view on Korea, right?
