market.<\/p>\n<p>The automaker in May delivered 85,982 new energy vehicle units from its Shanghai Gigafactory \u2014 where it produces Model 3 and Model Y units for China and several overseas markets \u2014 according to preliminary data published Tuesday by the China Passenger Car Association. That&#8217;s a 39.4% year-on-year increase over the same period in 2025.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:100%\" class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<p>In total, 1.36 million passenger EVs were sold across China&#8217;s domestic EV manufacturers in May, a 12% growth year-on-year, and 11% higher than April&#8217;s total, according to the CPCA&#8217;s report. These figures indicate &#8220;an initial recovery&#8221; in China&#8217;s EV market, the CPCA said, as sales from several other Chinese EV automakers grew modestly in the month.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-2\">Tesla<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> rival <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3\">BYD<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> halted an eight-month streak of declining sales volumes in May, posting 376,990 deliveries of its new energy passenger vehicles \u2014 a category which includes both battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles \u2014 a 0.02% increase over the 376,930 units delivered last May.<\/p>\n<p>Figures from Stellantis-backed <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-7\">Leapmotor<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> and Geely&#8217;s Zeekr both surged by more than 80% in May. After releasing its first flagship EV in over two years, Nio saw a 62.3% year-on-year increase. <\/p>\n<p>Xiaomi reported more than 30,000 EV deliveries in May, a 7.1% year-on-year increase. The tech giant launched its YU7 GT SUV \u2014 a performance-focused variant of its popular YU7 SUV \u2014 which reportedly set a lap record at the N\u00fcrburgring racetrack in Germany, making it the fastest production SUV.<\/p>\n<p>A handful of Chinese automakers also reported year-on-year declines in sales \u2014 18.4% for Li Auto, and 4.1% for XPeng.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:100%\" class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">FSD issues<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Tesla&#8217;s May sales growth also comes after the EV giant suggested earlier in the month that it was moving ahead with plans for a rollout of its proprietary self-driving technology.<\/p>\n<p>On May 21, a week after Tesla CEO Elon Musk joined a delegation of policymakers and business executives from the U.S. on a summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Tesla announced on X that the company had made its\u00a0FSD (Supervised) system\u00a0available in China.<\/p>\n<p>Before the announcement, only\u00a0select users had access to limited versions\u00a0as the automaker\u00a0awaited regulatory approval.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div to mainstream consumers in China.<\/p>\n<p>On May 29, local media outlet The Beijing News reported that Tesla was facing a lawsuit from a group of 10 Chinese car owners for falsely claiming that its FSD (Supervised) features had were available in China, despite not having received approval from Chinese regulators.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla has not responded to CNBC&#8217;s requests for
