Michael Selig said Tuesday in a CNBC &#8220;Squawk Box&#8221; interview. &#8220;They politically targeted people like the Winklevoss twins, and that&#8217;s not acceptable. We&#8217;re righting those wrongs. We&#8217;re going to start fresh. The agency should not be used to engage in lawfare.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:100%\" class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not going to get into the facts, because this is an active [litigation] \u2026 What is important here is that to the extent the agency was used to politically target folks, we&#8217;re reversing that, and we&#8217;re starting fresh,&#8221; he added. &#8220;That&#8217;s not going to happen again. It can&#8217;t happen again under my administration or a future administration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The comments are the first since the top derivatives regulator asked a federal judge in New York last week to vacate the January 2025 order against the exchange \u2013 which former CFTC chair Tim Massad has called &#8220;very unusual.&#8221; The order includes a $5 million penalty and an injunction that barred the company from making false statements to the agency. It was implemented in the final weeks of President Joe Biden&#8217;s administration.<\/p>\n<p>The remarks are the latest sign of the Trump administration&#8217;s effort to roll back Biden-era crypto enforcement actions.<\/p>\n<p>The case began in 2022, when the CFTC sued Gemini alleging that the company made false or misleading statements to regulators in 2017 while seeking approval for a bitcoin futures product.
